This whole Uman thing is so warped - it would be funny if not so sad. I was at the airport on Sunday when a man with a large black kippa asked me for money to pay for his ticket to Uman "lemaan Am Yisrael". Not chutzpa enough to ask someone else to pay for your trip to the Ukraine for Rosh Hashana when you could be davening in Israel, but to claim that going is for the good of the Jewish People!! With this, as with so much of what people do in the name of Orthodox Judaism today, I continually recall Rav Amital Z"TL saying how it is pure confusion of Ikar & Tafel.
